Including Technology Conversations in Nonprofit Strategic Planning

In the ever-changing landscape of nonprofit organizations, the development of a comprehensive strategic plan is a cornerstone for success. These plans, often spanning anywhere from three to five years, lay the groundwork for achieving an organization's mission and goals.

However, despite the increase in "Digital Transformation" projects at nonprofits of all sizes, a common oversight in many strategic planning processes is the lack of depth needed to highlight technology's impact on the nonprofit's mission.  This is especially true of smaller nonprofit organizations that may not have the technical expertise needed to help facilitate these discussions.  As technology continues to shape and redefine how nonprofits operate, it is imperative to engage in meaningful conversations about the implications and benefits of technology on the strategic planning process.

Nonprofit leaders often craft high-level strategies without diving into the specifics of how technology can support or bolster these initiatives. And while we aren't proposing the creation of excessively long winded strategic plans (in terms of sheer content/text), we are recommending that more insights be added which help illustrate not just the "Why" and "What" of the strategic plan, but also a bit more about the "How".

To address this gap, GreenMerits Consulting recognizes the need for deeper and more meaningful conversations around technology within the strategic planning process. By bridging this divide, nonprofits can unlock a wealth of insights to help make their strategic plans much more realistic, relatable, and achievable.  We offer this advisory service in various fashions including, but not limited to:

1. Technology Alignment Workshops

We bring together organizational leadership and technology experts in order to facilitate a deep dive into the nonprofit's strategic goals, identifying how technology can be leveraged to support and enhance each objective. The result is a cohesive plan where technology becomes an integral component of the overall strategy.

2. Technology Road-mapping

Our advisory assists nonprofits in developing detailed Technology Roadmaps aligned with their strategic plans. This visual representation outlines the integration of specific technologies over time, ensuring a phased and strategic implementation that aligns with organizational goals. This roadmap becomes a dynamic tool for decision-makers, guiding them through the evolving landscape of technology.

3. Gap Analysis

We conducts a comprehensive gap analysis to identify areas where the current technology infrastructure may fall short of supporting the strategic plan. Armed with this information, nonprofits can make informed decisions about technology investments, ensuring that each step contributes directly to the overarching mission.

4. ROI Analysis

Understanding the Return on Investment (ROI) for technology investments is crucial. Our advisory aids nonprofits in evaluating the tangible and intangible benefits of technology initiatives. This includes not only financial considerations but also how specific technologies contribute to the organization's mission and strategic objectives.

Strategic plans must evolve to reflect the increasing importance of technology.  Nonprofits leaders should not avoid these discussions due to fear or lack of knowledge.  Rather, they should embrace what technology can do, and recognize its ability (when properly/appropriately leveraged) to multiply the impact of their organizations.   GreenMerits is advocating for and facilitating deeper conversations around the implications and benefits of technology within the strategic planning process.
